Friendships

My cousin came to visit this past weekend and it just got me thinking about friendships in my life. If that seems like an interesting leap to make, I should explain that my cousin is also my oldest friends. We grew up together. Often in the same house.

Which is probably what got me thinking. I only see her once every year or so nowadays, because we live very far apart, but I still feel closer to her than any of my other friends. In fact, she's more like my little sister than my cousin.

Anyway. I got around to thinking... I've got a lot of people who I'm really friendly with. Friendly enough that people would think that we're friends. And I guess we are.

It's just that there are parts of me in the dark corners of my soul that I don't share with just anyone. Those parts of me, I share with only my closest friends.

Of those, I probably have about four. Maybe five.

But that's okay. Because I'm absolutely devoted to them.

So what about you? Do you make many friends? Or do you also only have a selected few?

I'm an outgoing person but am really, really close to only a few. A recent study found that friendships tend to exit a relationship after seven years, even some close friendships, with new relationships forming (as, apparently, that's human nature). I think people have always known/felt this. Hence, the expression if you die with five close friends you die a rich person.

I'm a bit of an introvert, but I've been so blessed. I have a handful of dear, dear friends (foremost, my husband) who I can share the deep thoughts of my soul with. The only greater treasure than those friends is knowing Christ--who knows me better than I know myself.

I think it could be interesting to think of it as kinds of friends. We all have those select few we tell our darker secrets to, but we also have friends that we share our more lighthearted experiences with. Both are necessary to lead a balanced and healthy life.

I have friends I often don't see for years but on meeting we continue conversations as though we'd talked only yesterday. There is one caveat. Friendships not renewed tend to wither.

i have always made friends pretty easily but only have a few close friends at this stage of my life and it only takes a few---although i wouldn't want to stop meeting new people

I've always only had a few girlfriends in my life that I can truly call a friend. We are not one big circle of friends though. It's more like I share a dear friendship with different girlfriends. There is one friend of mine who no matter how long its been since we've talked, we can always pick up right where we left off. :)
